In many water bodies around the world, there is a problem of too many nutrients. This occurs commonly in lakes, estuaries, and even in the Gulf of Mexico. It is called eutrophication. The excess nutrients are great for algae, but this causes overproduction of algae, causing algae blooms that block sunlight for underwater plants.

This is what happens when too many nutrients get into a body of water. The vegetation suffers, and this destroys the habitat of a lot of other organisms. Eutrophication is a problem in many lakes and estuaries, but there are efforts to correct it.
